If a feeding conflicts with a SwS prediction, we recommend adjusting the feeding or nap time to accommodate the feed. For instance, you might move the feeding slightly earlier and/or the nap slightly later.
For babies 2 - 4 months old, an “eat-play-sleep” routine can work well to minimize conflicts. This involves feeding your baby upon waking, engaging in age-appropriate play during their wake window, and then putting them down for a nap when they show tired cues. Focus on flexibility, follow your baby’s cues, and remember that routines are guidelines, not rigid rules.
For babies 5 months and older, we recommend moving away from an eat-play-sleep routine, as it can sometimes lead to short naps due to hunger. At this stage, many babies develop more predictable rhythms, making it easier to align feeding and sleep times. Scheduling feedings 30–45 minutes before naps often helps keep babies full and promotes longer, more restful sleep.
